Home / Bespoke Projects / Space-Saving Fridge Expansion for Growing Funeral Home
A local Funeral Director has been a loyal Customer to Twiggs since Richard Twigg’s era.
An opportunity arose for Mrs T to expand her business into another village. An additional fridge that she had purchased through Twiggs some years ago was relocated along with her Twigg ancillary equipment.
Mrs T’s business has continually grown. With growth comes storage issues and whilst having storage for 20, it was no longer enough. The only available area left to expand in their premises was the coffin store. The space was extremely tight, and it prevented us from being able to make use of standard opening doors. Roller shutter doors are only used as a last resort as they often sweat and are very expensive. The option was taken to make use of a sliding door to ensure the thermal properties of normal fridge doors remained.
The fridge was only ever going to be used to store coffins in, so we were able to make full use of the space fitting in a triple width system with literally 2mm a side to fit the racking in. We always allow for tolerance but in this case every centimetre counted.
What the photo does not show is the corridor in front of the fridge is only a metre wide. The fridge door slides off to the right to enable the fridge to be accessed. To load/unload the fridge the doorway to the mortuary prep room has been increased to match that of the fridge. The mortuary prep room floor space is now utilised to be able to load/unload the fridge – space is literally that tight. A remote split refrigeration system has been used to complete the install.
The byproduct from chilling a refrigerated room is heat from the compressor. We suggested putting the compressor in the garage as the air flow is sufficient and the heat generated is providing free heat to warm the garage up. This has helped Mrs T save money in heating costs and also helps to dry the Hearse and Limo off when they’ve been washed.
